Your Newborn Photoshoot Questions Answered

Find answers to common questions about preparing for your newborn’s photoshoot.

When is the best time to schedule a newborn photoshoot?

The ideal time for a newborn photoshoot is within the first two weeks after birth because babies are still very sleepy and flexible and can be easily posed.

How long does a newborn photoshoot typically last?

Newborn sessions with me usually last between 2 to 4 hours to allow for plenty of time for feeding/changing your baby as well as the posing aspect too.

What should I bring to the photoshoot?

We recommend bringing lots of nappies, wipes, and any special outfits or props you’d like to include in the session.  You may need extra milk for baby due to the nature of the photoshoot.  The room can be warm so baby may need more milk than normal.

Can siblings and parents be included in the photoshoot?

Absolutely! We encourage family members to join in and capture those precious family moments.

What should my baby wear for the photoshoot?

Bring baby in a button down sleepsuit so it’s easy to remove if baby is asleep when you get here.  I have a cupboard full of outfits and wraps for baby so only bring extra outfits if you have something specific in mind.

Do you offer in-home newborn photoshoots?

This isn’t necessarily something I am offering currently, however please do get in touch to see how I can best help you.

What if my baby is fussy during the session?

Don’t worry! We take breaks as needed to ensure your baby is comfortable and happy throughout the session.

How soon will we receive our photos after the session?

Your gallery viewing session will be booked in within 2-3 weeks following our session together.  This is where you come to view your images and design any wall art together.

What safety measures are in place during the photoshoot?

I am fully trained in safe newborn posing and hold full insurance too.  I am first aid trained and keep up to date with training throughout the year.

We take breaks for baby and you too.  If baby has any medical issues, please do discuss these with me prior to our session together.

I was recommended to Nicki by a work friend. We booked in to have a newborn shoot with her. She is very friendly, and made me feel that my newborn was in safe hands.

She creates a relaxed, and caring environment for the shoot, where the baby is the no.1 priority. She offers snacks and drinks to keep us parents going throughout the shoot.

Maternity Hospital Bag Check List

Maternity Hospital Bag Check List

Prepare for Your Baby's Arrival

Essential Hospital Bag Checklist

Knowing what to pack in your maternity hospital bag can be quite daunting.  How much will I need?  Will three suitcases be enough? Be best prepared with our comprehensive guide on what to pack for the hospital. Ensure you have everything you need for a smooth and comfortable experience.

Why Packing Right Matters

The Importance of a Well-Prepared Hospital Bag

As your due date approaches, having a well-packed hospital bag read to go can make all the difference. It ensures that you have all the essentials for both comfort and practicality, reducing stress and allowing you to focus on welcoming your new baby.

From personal items to baby necessities, each item plays a crucial role in making your hospital stay as pleasant as possible. Planning ahead can help you feel more in control and ready for this  moment.  Preparation here is key!

Must-Have Hospital Bag Items

Comfortable Clothing

Pack loose-fitting, comfortable clothes for your stay, including a robe and slippers for walking around the ward.

Toiletries

Include travel-sized body wash, toothbrush, toothpaste, and other personal hygiene items.  You might want to take shampoo and conditioner too.

Important Documents

You may want to bring any paperwork that’s related to your pregnancy that might have been given to you by your midwives.

Snacks and Drinks

If you’re like me, this is important!  Pack some snacks and drinks to keep your energy up during labour and recovery.  Snacks for any birthing partners are a good idea too!

Baby Clothes

Include a few outfits for your newborn, such as baby grows, vests and a going-home outfit.  You’ll want a blanket for the journey home too!

Nursing Supplies

No matter how you choose to feed baby, you’ll need something.  You’ll want breast pads, post partum pads and some formula if you’re choosing to bottle feed.  I found the premade formula bottles best for hospital stays.

Entertainment

Bring books, magazines, or a tablet to help pass the time during your stay.

Phone Charger

Ensure you have a charger for your phone to stay connected with loved ones.

Comfort Items for a Relaxing Hospital Stay

Preparing for childbirth can be overwhelming, but bringing a few comfort items can make your hospital stay more pleasant. Consider packing a cozy blanket or pillow from home to help you relax, especially if you use a pillow between your legs when sleeping. A soothing playlist or a favorite book can provide a welcome distraction. Don’t forget to include some snacks and a water bottle to keep you nourished and hydrated. Comfortable clothing and slippers are also essential for moving around the hospital with ease and dignity.

Baby's Essentials Checklist

Baby Grows

Pack several soft baby grows for your newborn to wear during the hospital stay.

Swaddle Blankets

Bring a couple of swaddle blankets to keep your baby snug and secure.

Nappies

Ensure you have enough newborn-sized nappies for your baby’s first days.

Baby Wipes

Baby wipes are essential for quick and easy clean-ups.  You may want some muslin squares during feeding too.

Hat and Mittens

A hat and mittens will help keep your baby warm and comfortable.

Car Seat

Don’t forget the car seat for your baby’s safe journey home.

Dummies

Consider bringing a dummy to soothe your newborn if this is something you are choosing to do.

Nursing Pillow

A nursing pillow can provide support during feeding times.

Supportive Partner Packing Guide

Essential Items for Partners During Hospital Stay

Partners play a crucial role in supporting the mother during childbirth. To ensure you’re prepared, pack a few essentials for yourself. Comfortable clothing will keep you at ease. Consider bringing snacks and a refillable water bottle to stay energized. A camera or smartphone is a must for capturing those first precious moments. Don’t forget chargers for your devices. A list of important contacts and a notebook can be handy for jotting down any instructions or memorable moments. Finally, a small gift for the new mother can be a thoughtful gesture to show your appreciation and support.

And the winner of the best newborn and family photographer in Birmingham and the West Midlands is …

Let me tell you the story.

Back in July 2023, I received an email from a luxury services magazine to say they had received a number of nominations for my business. So firstly, thank you to everyone who had nominated me!

I then had to accept the nominations and submit a number of my photos alongside my Google reviews (again thank you to everyone who posts reviews – they really do help!).

Following this, a group of people in the magazine put the nominations together with the reviews and examples of my work and compare to other companies in the West Midlands that have also been nominated.

I honestly cannot believe that I won! It’s so exciting!

It definitely goes to show that hard work, training and developing my craft is all worth it.

Thank you to all my clients who have trusted me to take your newborn, maternity, family  and cake smash photos this year. What an incredible 2023 I have had.

Looking forward to seeing so many more families in 2024.

Maternity Photoshoot – Capturing the start of your little one’s journey

Maternity photoshoots are becoming very popular right now and I can see why!

Capturing the very start of your little one’s legacy is one of the most important milestones in their journey.

maternity photographer birmingham

“I’m not used to being infront of the camera.  What if I am nervous?”

Don’t worry.  It’s perfectly normal to feel nervous at the photoshoot and it’s my job to help make you and your partner feel comfortable.

At our consultation meeting before the session, we can discuss your ideas, colours and vibes for your maternity photoshoot.  We can talk through any questions you may have and what you will need to bring with you.

maternity photoshoot birmingham

Is my partner allowed in the photos too?

Absolutely!  It’s a joint journey that you have been on to get here and I feel it so important for your little one to have you both in the images.

We will, naturally, be taking photographs of you on your own too.

Whilst I don’t have outfits for men, I just ask them to bring in a white top, a black top and to wear jeans.  Be mindful of boxers too as the band on the boxers may show above the jeans so don’t wear the tatty ones – get your best Calvin’s out.

maternity photoshoot birmingham

Do I have to be naked?

This is a question I get asked a LOT!

No, you don’t if you don’t want to.  Some of the dresses do open at the bump to allow you to be fully clothed but to show off your bump.

We always start with the big dresses.  You will always be wearing pants (unless you choose not to) and I have nipple covers for you to use during the session.  Any nude images will be taken tastefully and it will be all about the bump.

Christmas Family Minis Photoshoot Time!

Christmas Family Minis Photoshoot Time!

Well the temperature has dropped and the heating is on (just me?!) so I guess it’s time to think about those Christmas Minis, right?!

This year has been a very strange one for families.  Many exciting things have been postponed or cancelled and our spring/summer was not quite as we had imagined.  It will be great to have something exciting to look forward to … so get your Christmas Mini session booked now!

Christmas Mini family sessions are on Saturday 7th November or Sunday 8th November.

Christmas minis sutton coldfield

Our family Christmas Minis this year include our bed set up.  There will only be one set up this year as the sessions will be taking place in my home studio in Sutton Coldfield (not the studio in Tamworth) and so I am limited with space.

All Christmas minis are up to 20 minutes and are for immediate family only (due to covid restrictions).  Siblings and parents can come and sit on my ‘bed’ for portraits, read a story together, enjoy a milk (choice of milk, chocolate milk, banana milk or strawberry milk) and cookies, pose with stockings ready to be hung up for Father Christmas and maybe end with a pillow fight!  If you have something you’d like to include in the family photoshoot (for example teddy bears, a story, a present etc), you are more than welcome to bring them along.  Please make sure you arrive in your pyjamas or Christmas jumpers (if that is what you’re choosing to wear).

There are two different packages available:

£55 will include the session fee and 3 mounted 8×10″ prints of your choice

£70 will include the session fee and 3 digital images of your choice sent via digital download

As always, you are welcome to purchase any additional images, prints or wall art should you wish.

Christmas family photoshoot

Special Christmas products are available including these cute tree decorations or the snowglobe.  All come with your choice of image from the session.

These images will make the perfect family Christmas cards or presents for Grandparents.

Sessions are already selling quickly so message me to get yours booked in today!

Due to my covid safe policy, there are a very limited number of 20 minute Christmas minis slots this year.

There will be an hour between each session to allow for a thorough clean.

A £35 non-refundable booking fee secures your Christmas minis session – your session is not confirmed without the deposit payment.  The remaining balance is due on the day of your family session.

Should I have to postpone the sessions due to covid (either myself needing to self isolate or local lockdown restrictions), the sessions will be rearranged at a date and time conveinent for both you and me.
